I know all of our media class has read “The World is Flat” by Thomas Friedman, in which he argues how this new age of technology is truly universal. Living in a main technological center of America, however, one can sometimes forget that the rest of the world is really catching up to us. After hearing the news that I needed to blog one more time in order to get my grade, I became worried that I would not be able to do it. Right now, I am writing this on the beach in Grand Cayman. I was worried that I would not be able to connect to the internet anywhere. I received word earlier this morning that almost all of Grand Cayman, or at least where I am now, is wireless. The rest of the world is not only catching up to us, but surpassing us!!!

I agree with you Matthew. Although the technological level of our country seems advanced, other countries are in fact ahead in some areas. When I was in Israel this summer, I noticed that everyone there had an Internet phone, models that are not sold here. It was basically standard where as here an internet phone such an iphone or Blackberry is a non-standard luxury for most people. They also had solar panels on many homes in the cities- something not seen much here in America. In Israel, they also drive cars that are more efficient, yet less visually appealing. There were almost no trucks or large SUV’s on the road. It’s all a matter of prioritization. I believe that we need to start using our technological abilities less for unnecessary luxuries, and need to start focusing on using technology to conserve resources.
