As a follow-up to Adam’s post on Google’s new Chrome Web browser, this BusinessWeek article by Andy Beal raises some interesting points about substance vs. media hype in the branding of new technology.

If you have read any technology news in the last week–blogs, newspapers, listserv posts, you name it–you have probably witnessed a swell of excitement over Google’s new product announcement. Technophiles have hotly debated whether it would, like many of Google’s products, revolutionize the Web; they have discussed issues of corporate monopoly; they have eagerly anticipated getting to test-drive this new toy; they have read the slick comic book-style product announcement.

How to succeed in business

This year, Emery high school is doing the musical How to Succeed in Business without really trying. if you really want to succeed in business without really trying, all you have to do is get your company up to date with the current technological devices out. the old phrase “You are what you eat” has been replaced by You are what you email- well sort of. The one basic requirement for succeeding in business nowadays is to take advantage of technology and globalization. Big companies can now outsource more work than ever to more countries than ever, and due to ever expanding technology, they can have their work done way more efficiently. having your employees all be computer literate will lead to a sense of strengthened community, for now the ways of connectivity through the Internet are infinite. there are many, many new inventions and tools to save money, time, and labor. One of my favorite new technological devices that has come into practical use that will certainly save money, time, and labor is the conference cam. this cam, which functions sort of like a regular web cam, is set up to a screen, and projects an image which contains everyone using the cam, and sits them all at a digital conference table. This has extremely high benefits for big businesses because now, instead of big companies to have to fly employees all of the world for meetings, everyone, anywhere can connect to each other. The image is so clear that you can see everyone’s facial expressions, so it serves basically as a much cheaper, a lot less time consuming, way to have a meeting with clients or employees all across the world. So, although it might be a hassle to get all of your employees to be completely computer literate, It really is worth it. But, If you really want to succeed in business, all you have to do is find ways to increase connectivity, mainly through new technology such as the conference cam.
