“kids today, dont read enough” lies…

Everybody’s heard older generations complaining about kids not reading enough these days. Kids need to read more. Complain, complain, complain. I think these are a bunch of lies. I believe kids today read more than ever before. While it may not be the highest quality books that are being read, reading still takes place. Instead of books the internet has added a whole new demension of reading to the lives of youth. Whether it be social networking sites where people read about their friends, Magazines about celebrities, or advertisements everywhere you look. Reading happens. Its unavoidable. Now its not reading about the imaginary lives of fairy people and wizards like in the books of our parents, rather it is reading about the overly dramatic lives of real people . Its still reading. And yes, i realize what we do does not have the same benifits. But who needs a deep vocabulary. Languages are ever evolving so its only natural that we forget about some of these old terms as we gain and create our new ones. We gain and we lose it’s only the natural method of things as our generation shapes the new world.

So don’t tell me I’m not reading enough. I’m reading more than you ever did. Difference is im just not reading what you want me to read. For this reason, I demand old people to find a new cliche phrase, because what they keep saying is just not true; Its just- not- true.

(Disclaimer: For some people this may not apply…)

A New Place to Band Together – The Internet

One of the  greatest things about the internet is the opportunity that it brings to people. My personal favorite part of the internet is that there is no one definition of the meaning cool on it. Geeks, Nerds, Jocks, Drama Queens, Film Buffs, and all other groups can all band together with millions of other like the with a click of a button. My personal favorite of all groups online is digg. If you look at digg.com you would notice that they are just a myriad of random topics from (this new technical device came out), (God doesnt exist), ( Republicans are evil), to (heres a great picture of bacon). Digg not only brings together agnostic, democratic, nerds from all around the world. It also brings together a new type of comedy. It is a place where new jokes, ideas, and fun can be expressed that would be near impossible to find before the internet. The internet gives a home for all no matter what your tastes may be. The internet’s “never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down”

Is Lil’ Wayne Dead?

Is it true that Lil’ Wayne died?  This was the first thing I heard when I got home this weekend.  Apparently this rumor had been going around all day, and no one knew if it was true.  I decided to look up the rumor, and I found this article.  It looks a lot like an article from BBC news, and it says that Lil Wayne was shot in New Orleans and that he died on November 1st.  However, many people that I talked to seemed convinced that it wasn’t true.  I kept looking up the rumor and I found many articles claiming that the rumor is not true.  Apparently, the BBC article was fake.  This is both the best and the wort thing about the internet: anyone can put anything they want on the internet, whether it is true or not.  It is good a good thing because anyone can post something on the internet.  It does not discriminate, the only requirements are a computer and an internet connection.  Its bad because it means that many things that are posted are not true.  This means that things that many things that are posted on the internet can not be blindly trusted.  If it is from an unknown source, the consumer needs to do some research to make sure it is true.

NEW IDEAS FROM DIFFERENT PLACES

Filed under: Blogs, Internet, Technology, Web 2.0 — Tags: , , , , , , , — myeroshalmi @ 10:15 pm

A few weeks ago one of my favorite comics posted this

Now, you might ask why I would post this, and its not just because i love xkcd. Im actually not a really big fan of this particular comic. The reason i brought this up is because a short time after this comic was posted youtube came out with a new feature. Here is what it looks like:

does that look familiar. Youtube actually just took the idea straight from xkcd. Now this isn’t exactly from the comic because it does not automatically read it to you, instead it is an option but i think that it is very cool when major companies like youtube will listen to ideas like this. In this case from a middle aged guy who sits at homes and writes comics for a living. The possibilities are endless so if you have an idea. Share it. Someone might just agree and have the ability to make it happen

I INVENTED THE INTERNET

ok, so as you probably guessed, this blog is about the article we read in class today. This article has opened my eyes to the level of absurdity that the media reached by obsessing over this. he has been made fun of by countless comedians, and there are countless youtube videos making fun of him for this. Gore’s claim of inventing the internet even reached its way up to the all knowing and powerful, spadone loving site of snopes.com. but there is just one problem with all this mockery of him. HE NEVER CLAIMED TO INVENT THE INTERNET. He merely claimed to take initiative to creating the internet. This is true. Gore did in fact take initiative in creating the internet. True, the internet was already somewhat invented, but Gore was a major player in the entrepreneurial stage. Gore was the one who talked to Congress about the Internet, and passed countless motions and laws to advance the internet. but this is not what angers me. I am mad over the amount of press that this issue received. Why does the media feel the need to over obsess with trivial things. Sure its funny when the president makes a mistake in one of his speeches, but really, give them a break. after taking the time to actually watch some of the videos mocking Gore, I am somewhat repulsed. Has making fun of others, especially high ranked politicians become the high point in our media? Everyone should understand that all this was, was a slight miscommunication, and does that really deserve all our attention?
